EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
